Core System - Categories

By Lekkalu Team 3 min read

Core architecture

Lekkalu is built around a few simple, powerful systems like categories, goals, and accounts that work together to give you a clear picture of your money. Categories sit at the center of everything: every transaction, reminder, and goal uses categories so your data stays organized and easy to analyze.

What are categories?

A category is a label you attach to a transaction, reminder, or goal so you can later see where your money is going and why. You can assign more than one category to a transaction, which lets you track both the purpose (like Food) and the context (like a particular trip or project) at the same time.

Categories Selected

Creating and managing categories

You can create your own custom categories using any emoji and any name you like, and each category is linked to a type such as expense, income, or saving. Existing categories can be edited or deleted, but to delete one, it must not be in use by any transaction to avoid breaking your history. You can manage categories directly from the forms you already use when adding a transaction, setting a reminder, or creating a goal. so you never need to leave your flow.

Categories Editing

Using categories smartly

Categories power your charts, reports, stats in settings, and goal tracking, turning raw numbers into insights you can act on. To track a trip to Rome, for example, you might create a category called “✈️ Rome” and then tag transactions as “Rome + Food” or “Rome + Cab” so you can see both the total Rome trip cost and your usual food or cab spending for that month. You can even create a goal like “Rome Travel Expense” and link it to the same category to watch your progress as you spend and save.

Future customization

In the future, Lekkalu will let you customize categories even more, such as choosing colors per category to make charts and screens more fun and easier to read at a glance. This will take additional time and complexity to build on my end, but it will make your data feel even more personal and visually intuitive.

Privacy and feedback

Lekkalu is built by a solo developer (me) and is an ongoing, evolving project, with no tracking or analytics beyond critical crash reports. Your data stays private, and your feedback (via Settings → Community → Feedback) is what guides what gets improved next whether it is a bug, a feature idea, or a word of appreciation.
